Charles Muench: Painting the Sublime Light of the Eastern Sierra

Charles Muench paints the American West with reverence and authenticity. Living full-time in the Eastern Sierra, he immerses himself in the landscape he depicts, hiking remote backcountry trails with easel in hand to capture the ever-changing "Range of Light" in all its raw grandeur.

Trained under Professor Maynard Dixon Stewart at San Jose State University and later at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design in New York, Muench combines rigorous classical technique with boots-on-the-ground observation.

A pivotal 2000 backpacking trip over Kearsarge Pass transformed Muench's life. Waking among the granite peaks, he realized he needed to fully immerse himself in the Sierra. He relocated to the Eastern Sierra region, where fishing, hunting, and trekking the high country became both lifestyle and artistic practice.
