The composition is dominated by swirling blues and purples that suggest a powerful, flowing body of water, seemingly parted by an unseen force. This is contrasted by vibrant streaks of orange and yellow on the left, which evoke a sense of energy and light. Above, the sky transitions from a bright, almost ethereal yellow to darker, stormy grays and greens, adding an element of drama and tension. The painting's vertical orientation enhances the feeling of upward motion, as if the waters are being lifted and divided. Mercier's use of bold brushstrokes and vivid colors captures the viewer's attention, creating a sense of awe and reverence for the natural forces depicted.
