Gregory Barnes created "Kahana Colors" in 2023 using pastel on an 8x10 canvas, capturing the vibrant essence of a coastal landscape. The artwork is a symphony of blues and greens, with the ocean's turquoise hues seamlessly blending into the sky's soft pastels. The composition draws the viewer's eye from the rocky shoreline in the foreground, where dynamic brushstrokes suggest movement and texture, to the distant horizon where the sea meets a serene sky. On the right, subtle hints of architecture and palm trees evoke a sense of place, suggesting a tropical locale. The play of light across the scene creates a harmonious balance, infusing the piece with warmth and tranquility. Barnes' signature is visible in the lower right corner, affirming the authenticity of this signed work.

Our Curator's Notes

This pastel was originally done at the last Maui Plein Air Invitational in 2022. Greg has a deep love of the islands and the ocean taht comes together in this harmonious work. It depicts a beautiful surf spot on Maui Known as S Turns located a few miles from world famous Kaanapali. The view is looking north from the rocky shore towards the hotels in the distance. Using his unique style Greg shows the cloudy shadown streaking across the ocean while portraying the sense of a rainbow luminance in the distant clouds.
