In "Waiamea Hills 2," Ovanes Berberian masterfully captures the vibrant essence of a lush landscape through his use of oil on canvas. The painting, measuring 12 inches by 16 inches, is a vivid tapestry of color and texture, with sweeping strokes that convey the rolling hills and expansive skies. The foreground bursts with a kaleidoscope of greens, yellows, and pinks, suggesting a lively meadow that draws the viewer’s eye towards a serene, distant horizon. Berberian's skillful layering of colors creates depth, while the placement of a small, quaint structure nestled among the trees adds a focal point that invites contemplation. The sky, painted in soft blues and purples, is dappled with clouds, enhancing the sense of openness and tranquility. Signed by the artist, this work exemplifies Berberian’s ability to evoke emotion through dynamic compositions and a rich palette.

Our Curator's Notes

The following painting is another depiction of the waiamea Hills from Ovanes' trip to the Big Island. He took a group of friends and students up into the paniolo country of the Big Island as he would teach how to paint the vibrant colors while also developing a sense of mood that takes the viewer to the location. The bold shades of green are throughout the hills while clouds above cast shadows on the hills. A photo does not do the painting justice so it is recommended to view the video which enables the viewer to experience the true colors more profoundly.
